If there is a playoff or important game, today that game will not show up front and center for users. Therefore, users have hard time to catch up with key sports event taking place at that moment.

The requirement is to leverage sports app Home tab space to introduce key events happening at the moment. We decided to use the top space to highlight those events and used the card type UI that is scalable to be placed in various places in the future.

How can we make it easier for users to understand and find featured/important games in the Sports app?

Featured Game Card serves three different needs:
Users are able to easily understand the key events happening at the moment:
Users will be able to catch up with major 5 sports including football, baseball, basketball, hockey, and soccer
Users are able to see the games in different states including pre, live, and post

Highlight #1: Quick access to key events happening at the moment

Previously, there was no place for users to easily glimpse through and catch up with the important sports event happening at the moment. Featured Game Card is placed at the top of the Home tab, highlighting the important event in the most accessible way to users.

Highlight #2: Digest the game information of Big 5 sports at a glance

Featured Game Card cover Big 5 sports and their relevant leagues:
Football (NFL, NCAAF, CFL)
Basketball (NBA, WNBA, NCAAB, NCAAW)
Baseball (MLB, WBC)
Hockey (NHL)
Soccer (World Cup, European Leagues)

Highlight #3: Catch up with the game progress for all different states

Featured Game Card is dynamic, providing the information updated in real time that covered different states of game including pre, live, post status.

Increased 15% increase in CTR to Game Detail page
Average 20% of users tap engage with the Featured Game Card, even 32% during tentpole event season including NFL Superbowl

Accommodate newly updated Sports design system to upgrade the overall visual design
Consider switching to full-width style instead of card based UI. This will get rid of the constraints on maintaining same height for all card.
